Galway is the capital of the West of Ireland, a thriving modern university city, situated on the banks of the River Corrib. A uniquely cosmopolitan city with something for everyone, it attracts thousands of visitors each year. The popular seaside resort, Salthill, lies just 3km west of the city and boasts the longest promenade in Ireland.   Galway is also an important centre for promoting the Arts, Crafts and Culture and is home to a number of excellent Art Galleries which promote both Irish and international art. 	Galway's nickname is "The City of the Tribes" in honor of the 14 tribes (families) that led the city during its Anglo-Norman period.   The longest formal debate on record anywhere in the world was conducted at University College Galway in 1995. The motion debated—for 28 days—read as follows: "This house has all the time in the world."   Galway is famous for it’s Oyster Festival and horse racing. They don’t race the oysters (or eat the horses).   "Che" Guevara’s  great-great grandfather, Patrick Lynch, was born there but his poster never caught on.
